What’s my style?

Someone asked me today about my choreography. What the style was. And I ended up explaining it like this:

*It’s full of moments of real life, that you recognise.

*It’s often in 5/4 and 7/4, as these are closer to the natural rhythms we live by.

*I ban certain contemporary dance moves, as they have no relationship with reality.

*It’s full of movements that double back on themselves, turn one way then the other, stop and triple start (which can feel very contrary for dancers) but that’s just like our thoughts do.

*It’s about moments of precision and moments of chaos, and the comfort in that.

*It’s about an active, real time relationship with other things that enable us to create magic (such as the tech we use). Where dance, science, visual arts, audience and composition sit at that fine melting point.

*It changes thought quickly, and tells stories.
